How Do You Sell a Scent on Camera? My Approach to Fragrance UGC

Turkan Wood 5 min read

Someone asked me recently how you even do UGC for fragrance. You can't smell through a screen. There's no before-and-after. You can't show it "working." It's a legitimate question and honestly it made me think about what I actually do when I create fragrance content.

The answer is: you sell the feeling, not the scent.

Describe it like you're writing a short story

The most effective fragrance content I've made and seen doesn't try to describe the scent technically (woody, musky, fresh florals with a hint of citrus — that's a press release). It describes the experience of wearing it.

What does it make you feel like? What does it remind you of? What kind of moment does it fit? "This is the perfume I wear when I want to feel put-together without trying too hard" tells someone everything they need to know. It's not about the notes — it's about the identity the scent gives you.

The application moment matters

Visually, the spray or dab of a fragrance is actually really satisfying to watch. There's something inherently elegant about it. Lean into that. Slow it down. Show the bottle beautifully. The ritual of applying fragrance is part of the product experience and video captures that really well.

Context does the heavy lifting

The best fragrance UGC puts the product in a world. Morning light, a beautiful bathroom, getting dressed for something. Evening out, a hotel room, a date. The context isn't background noise — it IS the story. A fragrance ad that looks like someone standing in a white room spraying a bottle is forgettable. The same fragrance shown as part of a "getting ready for a night out" routine is aspirational.

Reactions are underrated

If you can capture a genuine first-spray reaction — the little moment of "oh, wow" — that's incredibly powerful. It's visceral and real in a way that no amount of describing can replicate. The viewer doesn't smell it but they believe the reaction.

Fragrance is one of my favorite categories to create for, honestly. If you're a fragrance brand looking for content that sells, let's talk.
